Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS) and technical efficiency: An analysis of citrus farms in Brazil
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study aims to investigate the impacts of personal aspects and aspects of the decision-making process (Rougoor et al., 1998) on the technical efficiencies of citrus farms in Brazil. A variable that measures the adoption of Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS) was created, which is an innovative aspect of this paper. Primary data for the crop year of 2013/14 (cross sectional data) were collected from a sample of 98 farms located in the State of São Paulo, one of the largest citrus regions in the world. The single stage model developed by Battese and Coelli (1995) was used to estimate the stochastic production frontier translog and the determinants of the efficiency of farms. The results showed that the technical efficiency scores across citrus farms range from 28% to 97%, with a mean of 75%. The expectation formation (personal aspect), the use of long-term contracts and the adoption of Farm Management Information Systems (aspects of decision-making processes) were significant determinants of technical efficiency. This result confirms the hypotheses built around these variables. 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Farm Management Information Systems: a Case Study on a German Multifunctional Farm
Accurate and easy to use Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS) are of fundamental importance for a successful operational farm management. However, still today many farmers do not use FMISs for various reasons, like lack of knowledge and the complexity of many available FMISs. In particular for small to medium-sized farms and for multifunctional farms appropriate FMISs hardly exist. This p...
متن کاملComparing Technical and Economic Efficiency among Organic and Conventional Italian Olive Farms
In many European states such as Spain and Italy there has been a significant growth of organic utilizable surface as a consequence of both a change in the model of agricultural production and also in order to satisfy arising demand of organic food. The purpose of this research was to investigate the level of technical, allocative and economic efficiency in Italian olive farms with two different...
متن کاملFarm Management Information Systems
The fast changing environment, including difficult market conditions and a high exposure to financial risks are major reasons for changing production policy. Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS) appear to be a powerful tool to deal with the new conditions. However, farmers still rely more on their intuition than on proper management tools, when it comes to running a farm business. Many fa...
متن کاملAnalysis of Farms Performance Using Different Sources of Irrigation Water: A Case Study in a Semi-Arid Area
Improving production efficiency is the main objective of government action to avoid efficiency losses and to increase the income of farmers. The aim of this study was to analyze performance levels of farms in the irrigated perimeter of Tadla in Morocco, according to the source of irrigation water. Thus, technical, allocative and economic efficiency were analyzed for farms in this area. To estim...

In this paper, non parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was subjected to the energy data of wheat producers in Punjab state, India, and technical, pure technical and scale efficiencies were calculated for farms both category wise and zone wise. The main objective was to determine the strength of the correlation between non-parametric efficiencies and indices such as energy ratio and speci...
